Fears are like dragons
Our deepest fears are like dragons guarding our deepest treasure. Rainer Maria Rilke I love this quote. One, because it involves dragons, and two, because it’s thought-provoking. It’s a quote that makes sense on the surface and simultaneously perplexes me on a deeper level. It’s perplexing because I wonder about those deep-seated, dragon-like fears. Have I correctly identified those fears? Do I dare name those dragons? It goes without saying that our fears change with the passage of time. Mine have, certainly. For 20+ years after leaving Africa, nightmares plagued me, and my greatest fear was returning to my troubled motherland. Before I completed my first novel, my greatest…

Be careful what you wish for
They say, ‘be careful what you wish for, because you might get it.’ But that statement is rather singular in my opinion. Singular, because it doesn’t take into account the multi-faceted fuckery that is part and parcel of life. Let’s face it, no decision to change or move beyond your comfort zone will ever be made in a void. Meaning, everything you do will be subject to people—who have their own baggage, their own agendas, etc. In which case, it’s probably more fitting to say ‘be careful of who is already on the other side of what you wish for.’ For instance, who is on the other…

Cape of Storms, second edition has a new cover!
Dear Readers, The second edition of my first novel, Cape of Storms, is out now. Among the changes, it has a new cover and I have replaced the Author Q&A, at the back of the book, with a Letter and Book Club Questions. First, let’s talk about the cover As you may or may not know, I design all of my book covers. Much like my publishing journey, my knowledge and experience regarding book cover design started at zero and it is something that I have slowly but surely taught myself over the past 8 years, through a series of trial and error. Cape of Storms Cover So, when I…

On my way to visit you…
On my way to visit you, wildflowers of every hue peeked out from grassy clumps and tree stumps, wire fences and box hedges. The white stigma of the fuchsia bougainvillaea resembled eyes as I passed by—the big brother of the plant kingdom, I thought. The ironbark tree near the swings is shedding bark, and the channel-billed cuckoos are back from Papua New Guinea for the summer. I hear them all the time, even at night when the frogmouth is calling and the stone curlews are hissing and screeching at the red fox that lives in the undergrowth beneath the water pipes. Last week I saw a kookaburra swoop into…

New year, new skin ♥
Poetry is a form of art – inexplicable in its ability to communicate, resonate and provoke. I said that back in 2014, when I founded Paperfields Press, and it’s a sentiment I still agree with. Words, like artwork, can cause a deep stirring in my heart, mind, and soul. Not all, but some, and not often, but sometimes. Similarly, a poetry book is a form of art, and it’s important (but not always easy on an indie budget) to match the cover with the content. When I think back to my first book and the cover I envisioned, my budget to commission a cover and my skills to design a cover…

Debut Novel Announcement
Dear Readers, When I abandoned my motherland, South Africa, at age 23, I knew that I was destined to write a novel about the place and events that would haunt me long after I left. Cape of Storms is that novel, and, when it is published, on 29 November 2019 by Auteur Books, it will have travelled an epic 21 year journey from concept to publication. Auteur Books Post-school and pre-motherhood I studied for a total of 6.5 years and worked in a variety of industries and roles for 16 years. Post-motherhood I couldn’t get a job (entry level or otherwise) so I went solo and offered a service writing…
