My editing philosophy as an experienced poetry editor

As your poetry editor, my editing philosophy is to meet you at your current skill level and help you achieve your best work without changing your voice, style, or intention. However, I am also honest in my critique and I will push and challenge you to dig deeper and write with more clarity, focus, as well as help you tease out imagery and develop imagery/metaphorical language where needed.

Am I the right poetry editor for you?

—Because of my 20+ year background in poetry and my degree in literary and film studies, my strengths are lyrical writing styles, visual and metaphorical language, subtext and overarching themes.

—With 10 years of independent publishing experience, I am a good fit for poets and writers who have chosen the indie publishing path.

—Writing is a craft, and improving one’s craft is an eternal cycle that is not accomplished alone. If you’re looking to build a long-term relationship with an editor who is deeply invested in you and your work then I would love to hear from you.

Bianca is a fantastic and talented editor whom I would highly recommend to any poet, novice to experienced. Her work was fast but unbelievably thorough! She balances expertly on the challenging tightrope of providing thoughtful, constructive feedback alongside gentle praise and encouragement. I felt “done” with my manuscript before releasing it to her, but I’m now also *proud* of my finished work thanks to Bianca’s edits. I would not hesitate to work with her again. Five stars truly deserved — thank you, Bianca!

My Approach to Poetry Editing

I consider all aspects of the work, including the title, sequence of poems, structure, language, themes, imagery, syntax, word choice, grammar, etc. In my experience, every project is unique and so my approach and feedback will be guided and informed by that individuality.

For bigger projects (+5k words), the process I find most effective is to work with someone through a series of editing/critique phases.

Phase 1: is typically superficial line edits – editing grammar and punctuation. In this phase, I will also ask questions so that I can gain a better understanding of individual intent and style.

Phase 2: The second phase will go deeper and look at word choice, word economy, syntax, creative language, writer idiosyncrasies, and every other relevant detail that will improve overall readability, clarity and flow.

Phase 3: The third phase involves a combination of phase 1 and 2 in order to tweak and fine-tune the work.

I highly recommend working with Bianca! As a first-time self-publisher, I’m so thankful that I found her. I received wonderful and much-needed feedback about my manuscript, as well as, a thorough look at each of my poem’s word choice, pacing, and more. Over all, I feel so much more confident in my book and will be using this service again in the future.
