    MA in Creative Writing

Hello friends, If I look pleased with myself, it’s because I am. I have been accepted to UQ (University of Queensland) to study an MA in Creative Writing!!!! I still have no idea how I’m going to pay for it, as I’m not eligible for a student loan, BUT I will find a way, because I’ve been accepted into an MA y’all!! I haven’t been this excited about something for a long time, and I am so so ready to take this next step on my writing journey. It’s rather unfair that I’m not entitled to a student loan in Australia, because I have lived in Australia for 11 years and…

My poem to be featured in a short film

a poet writes, never knowing if the seeds of her words will blossom into flowers In 2013, I wrote a poem called, Tree of Life, inspired by the Gustav Klimt painting of the same name. In 2014, the poem was published in my first poetry collection, Death and Life. And then the first bud appeared in Spring In 2016, I was approached by a NY Filmmaker who sought permission to use my poem, Tree of Life, in the trailer for a short film called The Avant Gardener. I said yes, of course! I have recently seen the trailer and it is jaw-droopingly beautiful, I gotta tell you.  Anyways, the trailer…

    3 F’s for Writers

This is one of several Archive posts after losing 3 years of content a little while back (you can read that here). Are you complicating your writing life? If you… Treat writing like a hobby, Spend more time on social media than writing, Have more WIPs than completed Manuscripts, and Focus on publishing versus building a portfolio.. Then you might want to simplify your writing life by incorporating the 3 Fs into your writing philosophy. 1. FOCUS The first step to simplifying your writer life is to reassess your role as a writer and adjust your FOCUS… In the 21st Century, writers are expected to do a lot more than…

    Archive: The Journey To 100k

This is a post from 2014 that was lost when I migrated my site last year. I did it! I’ve got a complete first draft of my novel, The Colour Fence (now Cape of Storms).   Over the last two months I have written over 70,000 words and now have a completed first draft of 106,000 words. I am aware that the real work is yet to begin; there will be countless edits, revisions and drafts ahead, followed by the search for an agent and/or publisher…but, before I think about that, I’m taking a moment to celebrate what has taken me 16 years to achieve – a complete, rough, first…

    Archive: Writing Dream or Profession?

First Posted on October 28, 2014 by BGBOWERS Are you gazing at a writing dream or fostering a writing career? That is today’s question… If you’d asked me this question 17 months ago, when I started this blog and began my creative writing journey in earnest, I would have answered “a bit of both”. On the one hand, I believed that hard work and dedication would be key components for genuine progression and eventual success, but, on the other hand, I held a misconception; that passion and purpose (aka a ‘calling’) was enough of a sword to conquer the mythical beast that I perceived writing to be. Between you and me,…

    Personal Cycles

It is my belief and experience that humans, like nature, are subject to cycles. Cycles in nature include seasons, lunar cycles, and life cycles (to name a few). For individuals, our personal cycles may be less obvious, but they are present, and the ability to identify those cycles can assist us to navigate through and forward.     What is a personal cycle? Personal cycles could include mini cycles like our 12 hour day and 12 hour night. We could also view our health, career, fitness, parenting, and personal development as a perpetual series of personal cycles. Plus, there are cycles that accompany our short and long-term goals. When you…

    Endings and Beginnings

ENDINGS I recently took a break from social media because I had lost my why. Whatever goal I started out with was no longer driving or exciting me. Even my #lobby4love, which began as a labour of love, felt like a meaningless obligation. After serious consideration I stepped away to gain perspective about the root of my restlessness. After a few days of introspection I concluded that I had reached the end of a personal cycle (several different cycles in fact, one of which I’ll discuss here and others in future posts). WRITING & SOCIAL MEDIA CYCLE 4 years ago I started a new cycle by stepping out of the…
